History

Ecstatic Dance Berlin dates back to at least 2014, when early events were held at Ballhaus Rixdorf in Neukolln. Co-founded by Pascal de Lacaze, the community grew steadily within Berlin's fertile alternative and countercultural soil, a city already famous for its club culture and creative freedom. The movement found a natural home alongside Berlin's existing 5Rhythms and contact improvisation scenes, eventually establishing regular bi-weekly dances at FMP1 (Franz-Mehring-Platz 1) in Friedrichshain. Over the years, additional communities like Rising Spirits and Natural Flow emerged, spreading ecstatic dance across multiple neighborhoods and venues.

The Scene

Berlin's ecstatic dance scene carries an intensity shaped by the city's reputation for deep, immersive experiences. Events follow a clear arc: doors open for a movement warm-up, followed by an opening circle, then two or more hours of DJ-led freeform dance. The atmosphere is barefoot, phone-free, alcohol-free, and drug-free, with strong emphasis on consent and personal boundaries. The community is described as a true tribe where newcomers feel welcomed from the start. Expect a mix of expressive, sometimes raw movement alongside gentler, meditative movers, all sharing the same floor without judgment.

Insider Tips

  • Buy tickets in advance online as popular sessions with well-known DJs sell out, especially at FMP1.
  • Bring layers — studios can be cool at the start and very warm once 100+ people are dancing.
  • The post-dance integration space is a core part of the experience in Berlin; don't rush off after the closing circle.
  • Check the Ecstatic Dance Berlin Facebook page and Telegram group for last-minute pop-up events and special gatherings not listed on the main website.
  • Berlin's tap water is safe and most venues provide water stations — bring a reusable bottle.

Where to Stay

Kreuzberg and Neukolln offer the most convenient stays, with abundant hostels (EUR 20-35/night), guesthouses, and Airbnbs within walking distance of most venues. Friedrichshain is ideal if you primarily attend FMP1 events. Budget-conscious dancers should look at shared flats (WG-Zimmer) for longer stays. The area around Schlesisches Tor and Gorlitzer Park puts you at the heart of the conscious/alternative scene.

Compared to Other Cities

Berlin offers the most urban, culturally layered ecstatic dance experience of any European city. Unlike tropical destinations like Bali or Koh Phangan, the scene here is deeply intertwined with Berlin's broader alternative culture — techno, art, activism, and conscious living all converge. The community skews younger and more international than many European cities, and the variety of facilitators and DJ styles is exceptional. If Bali is ecstatic dance's spiritual home and Koh Phangan its tropical playground, Berlin is its countercultural heartbeat.
